Farscape icons for inspired20in20
Eek. This is my entry for inspired20in20 round 6, and also my first time participating in that comm. My claim was Farscape. So, the theme for the round was 'out of your box', to face our iconing fears, which sort of scared me because frell, when you go to a new community, you want to show what you can do, not what you can't :') But in the end I was really inspired by it all and had tons of fun. Most of these things I have wanted to learn anyway, now was the perfect opportunity to try.

I'm still not even sure what my 'box', is, but I know for sure that these things are outside it and I included one or more in each icon: muted colors, lowish contrast, no textures (the last 4 don't have a single texture! :O), very simple icons, blocking and other creative compositions, SUPER bright and bold and unnatural coloring on characters (I know I often do that for backgrouns, but not characters), using brushes (I always forget I have them o_O), cropping/composition in a way that the character isn't attached to the lower end of the icon (I ALWAYS do that automatically, blah), using other coloring methods instead of selective coloring and color balance, using tiny text again (like all iconers, I had my tiny text phase... now they mostly look awkward to me so yeah, definitely a fear!), monochrome with pastel/bright colors, text overlapping part of the character, and black and white (I make them but only when I absolutely have to, in other words when I've screwed up the coloring beyond salvage. This is why I sometimes even look down on my b&w icons and don't feel comfortable making them because I know what they represent. This time I wanted to make intentional b&w icons just to see if there's a difference, and yeah, there is! :D).

I really like #1! The composition + text is great. And the coloring in #14 and #15 is amazing *_____*

Nothing short of amazing, particularly for the play with colors and light, as in 6, 8 and 16.

But the stark beauty of nr. 3 and 5 is also wonderful. Snurching away... :-)

Oh, and since we're on the subject: how do I credit icons' creators when I use their work?
I've looked up and down LJ's menus, but I can't find anything. And maybe it's there, staring me in the face even if I can't see it....

Aw, you always flatter me too much :) Thank you, I'm glad the different styles worked for you! Yay, I'm super glad of the snurching especially =D

This is how you credit:

Um, don't mind the Finnish... That's the little field below the userpic uploading button. The lower textfield is a really good place for a credit cause you can include a link too.

I don't really care about credit that much anyway, the only reason I ask people to do that is so that if someone finds my icons by browsing another person's userpics and they like what they see, they know where they can find more :) I've found so many wonderful iconmakers exactly this way.

Thank you for the info!

the only reason I ask people to do that is so that if someone finds my icons by browsing another person's userpics and they like what they see, they know where they can find more

Also, credit should be given to talented people :-)

It doesn't seem to work! **howling in frustration**
I google a bit and tried different ways of putting in the string, with and without the quotation marks, but nothing appears under the icons!!! I'm beyond useless...

I took a look and it seems to work just fine :) Guess you figured it out. Aw, you're not useless at all. These are sort of 'iconing world' things that I had no idea about before entering this hobby, so don't worry :) I think copying exactly what I wrote in the example pic should work. You just have to be careful with spelling and stuff (oh, I just realized that you're a writer, so you probably always are... :D). Let me know if you still have trouble with it!

Thank for the help!
You say it works, so that means the credit shows? Because I see nothing...

LOL Not so much, after all...
That's why I have my brave knights always beside me: Sir Spell-Checker and Lord Thesaurus ;-)

Yeah, the credit shows for me! This is what I see on your userpics:

Which is how it should look. But hey, I think I know why you think it's not working; when you're in the edit mode, the comments section shows the full html code. The reason is that it's easier to edit it this way. When you're just viewing it, you see them like the rest of us. You can see your userpicks in this mode by going to your profile and clicking on your icon :) (or some shorter route but this is how I do it, lol). Sorry I forgot to tell this before! I just didn't think of it :)

Thanks again! I followed your advice and I saw the credits there: it's just that LJ does not show them credited *to me*, and with that I mean I don't see the credits in the norma view, but that's ok.
As long as my.... icons pushers :-D get their due credit, I'm happy.

Thank you for your patience... :-)

No problem :) I'm glad you went through so much trouble just to credit!

when you go to a new community, you want to show what you can do, not what you can't

RIGHT? RIGHT? this is basically all my feelings about this round, said in a much more concise and articulate way than i could ever really hope to achieve

anyway, i think you did a really great job with your b&w icons! i know what you mean about them being a last resort after you've messed up the colouring, but they came out really soft and great, especially number 2. i also really like what you came up with for cutting the subjects out, like in 1, 2, 4, and 11-- 1 and 11 especially make use of colours, textures, and text in a really strikingly great way.

great set! :)

Haha, glad I'm not alone :-D And thanks <3 I'm really happy to hear that.

I really like your use of text, and the lighting on 3 and 17 are gorgeous!

Oh, I didn't comment on these, thought I did, sorry.

I really love them, especially the Black and White once (I have a thing for B/W). 3 and 5 are my favourites, and for some reason 16 and 17 really spoke to me. I'm not too sure what they were saying, but well... ;)

I actually think about snagging one or two and finally opening up my icon space for icons not made by myself. I've always avoided that before. So yeah, I really like them. :D
a random javascript function: chiana closecropjsfunction on January 26th, 2012 04:00 pm (UTC)
OMG that's a real big compliment, thanks! :) I opened up my icon space for others as soon as I started browsing other FS iconers journals through 'farscapeicons'. So now I only use my own if nobody else icons the subject :D

16 was my least favorite in this set, so I'm both glad and surprised that it spoke to you :) (...I hope it wasn't saying 'I have too many textures on me!' or something similar...)

The funny thing is that I really love b&w too. Just not made by me. So yay, I'm super glad they work for you! :)
